Does Runway add Content Credentials?
Short answer
Documented: Runway says it implements C2PA so that AI-generated content can be traced back to its source, and that it adds invisible watermarks to every Runway generation.

What the source says
Content Credentials (C2PA)
Runway’s safety page, “Provenance signals”.
“We implement C2PA so that AI-generated content can be traced back to its source.”
C2PA at the Gen-3 Alpha launch
Runway’s 17 June 2024 announcement.
“Gen-3 Alpha will be released with a new set of safeguards, including our new and improved in-house visual moderation system and C2PA provenance standards.”
Invisible watermark
Runway research post of 7 October 2024.
“We do this by adding invisible watermarks to every Runway generation, thereby retaining evidence in the metadata that it is AI-generated.”
If you publish Runway output in the EU
Marking outputs in a machine-readable way is the duty of the tool’s provider under Article 50(2) of the AI Act. If you use the output for work and it is a deepfake, the visible disclosure is yours (Article 50(4)), whatever Runway adds to the file. What that means for your content: AI video.
Scope and limits
- The safety page does not list which models or plans are covered and shows no date.
- Runway’s wording ties the “invisible watermarks” to retaining evidence in the metadata, so it is unclear from the text whether it is a pixel-level watermark.
- Runway’s help centre blocked scripted fetches, so per-plan behaviour could not be read. No statement about removal was found.
If the credentials are removed
C2PA data travels inside the file, so a re-encode, screenshot or upload that does not carry it across leaves an image with no credentials. A watermark or fingerprint can help find a record again, if one was stored (see the C2PA specification’s soft bindings). Proofcan is independent of Runway: for images you mark with Proofcan it writes a C2PA manifest, an invisible watermark and a registry record. It does not change or vouch for how Runway marks its own outputs.
Check a file yourself
The Content Credentials checker reads the C2PA data in an image in your browser and shows who signed it, the generating tool and whether the signature still matches. It reads what a file declares; it does not detect AI from pixels, and a file with no credentials proves nothing either way. See why metadata gets stripped.
Questions
- Does Runway add Content Credentials?
- Documented: Runway says it implements C2PA so that AI-generated content can be traced back to its source, and that it adds invisible watermarks to every Runway generation.
- Does Runway use an invisible watermark?
- The documentation we read says so: “We do this by adding invisible watermarks to every Runway generation, thereby retaining evidence in the metadata that it is AI-generated.”
- How can I check an image from Runway?
- Use the Content Credentials checker on Proofcan to read any C2PA data in the file. Runway offers a C2PA verifier page that inspects manifests in images, videos and audio.
