Check an image’s content credentials.

Short answer

This free checker reads the C2PA Content Credentials inside an image in your browser, with no upload: who signed it, which tool made it, whether it declares AI generation and whether the signature still matches the file. It cannot tell whether an image without credentials is AI-generated.

Official source: C2PA Technical Specification 2.2

What this reads

  • The C2PA manifest in the file: signer, generating tool, declared source type, signing time.
  • Whether the signature and hashes still validate against the file’s current bytes.
  • A Proofcan marking, if present, with the record ID to look up.

What it does not do

  • It does not analyse the picture, so it cannot recognise AI imagery without credentials.
  • It does not read invisible watermarks or search fingerprints.
  • It does not vouch for the signer. See What is C2PA.

Questions

Can this tool tell whether an image is AI-generated?
No. It reads the Content Credentials (C2PA data) that a tool or camera may have embedded in the file. If the file has them and they declare AI generation, the tool shows that declaration. If the file has none, the tool can say nothing about how the image was made.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The file is read in your browser with WebAssembly and is not sent to Proofcan or anyone else. Only if you choose to look up a Proofcan record afterwards, the 8-character record ID (not the image) is sent to Proofcan.
Why does it say no content credentials were found?
Either the image never had any, or they were removed. Re-encoding, screenshots and uploads to some platforms can drop file metadata, including C2PA manifests. Absence of credentials is not evidence either way.
Does “signature intact” mean the signer can be trusted?
No. It means the file still matches what the signer signed. Anyone with a signing certificate can sign a claim; this tool does not check the signer against a trust list, so judge the signer yourself.
