What the source says
Content Credentials (C2PA)
Black Forest Labs knowledge-base article on C2PA in FLUX outputs.
“Black Forest Labs (BFL) embeds C2PA Content Credentials into images and videos generated by the FLUX model family.”
Optional soft-binding watermark
From the same article. “Optionally” means it is not stated for every output.
“Optionally embeds a soft-binding watermark to enable recovery of credentials after format stripping.”
What the vendor says about removal
From the same article.
“Embedded manifests can be removed.”
If you publish FLUX (Black Forest Labs) output in the EU
Marking outputs in a machine-readable way is the duty of the tool’s provider under Article 50(2) of the AI Act. If you use the output for work and it is a deepfake, the visible disclosure is yours (Article 50(4)), whatever Black Forest Labs adds to the file. What that means for your content: AI images and AI video.
Scope and limits
- Scope per the article: images from the BFL API, Developer Playground and BFL-controlled hosted integrations. Self-hosted or on-premise open-weight outputs are outside BFL’s signing, and BFL says it cannot guarantee credentials are attached.
- The article lists the signer as a BFL certificate and the assertions as AI-generative content, claim generator, a created action with a UTC timestamp, and the model name and version; prompts are not recorded.
- The article also says social platforms and content systems may strip or modify metadata, and that editing after signing can break the hard binding.
If the credentials are removed
C2PA data travels inside the file, so a re-encode, screenshot or upload that does not carry it across leaves an image with no credentials. A watermark or fingerprint can help find a record again, if one was stored (see the C2PA specification’s soft bindings). Proofcan is independent of Black Forest Labs: for images you mark with Proofcan it writes a C2PA manifest, an invisible watermark and a registry record. It does not change or vouch for how Black Forest Labs marks its own outputs.
Check a file yourself
The Content Credentials checker reads the C2PA data in an image in your browser and shows who signed it, the generating tool and whether the signature still matches. It reads what a file declares; it does not detect AI from pixels, and a file with no credentials proves nothing either way. See why metadata gets stripped.
